About The World Series

2018 World Series

The World Series is the annual championship of Major League Baseball (MLB) which is played between the American League (AL) champion team and the National League (NL) champion team.

World Series Format

The World Series champion is determined in a best-of-seven playoff with the games played in the champions team's host cities. Using a "2-3-2" playoff format, the games alternate between the home stadiums of the American League (AL) champion team and the National League (NL) champion team.

World Series Home Field Advantage Rule

Starting in 2017, home-field advantage for the World Series will be determined by the best record between the respective American League (AL) champion team and the National League (NL) champion team. Of the two AL and NL champion participants, the team with the best record hosts World Series games 1 and 2. The opposing champion team hosts games 3, 4 and 5 (the fifth, if necessary). The final two games (if necessary) return to the host city of the champion team with the best record. This is a change from the home-field advantage rule used from 2003-2016 whereby the World Series home-field was awarded to the league that won the MLB All-Star Game.
